I replaced the factory speakers in my father’s Ampex Tape/Radio system in’69/’70 to give him better fidelity when he listened to NPR every morning. They were in gentle usage for 30 years, when he gave the speakers to me when they remodeled. They have been in storage in my music room since. Our home is non-smoking. I had a 1995 model front bumper and brush guard and wanted to put them to good use so I created a matching package inspired by retro/early Range Rover and Camel Trophy styling. This particular kit is custom and 1 of only 1. This roof rack is 100% custom made and accommodates the mounting of 4 auxiliary lights across the front (2 grouped pairs/Camel Trophy style) as well as 2 auxiliary lights in the rear. The 1995 full width brush guard has been backdated as I modified it to not wrap around the corner lamps and the rubber bumper strips have been replaced with metal. All fabricated components are sandblasted to remove impurities prior to coating, zinc primer base coated and finished in semi-gloss black powder coat (shown in raw steel prior to sandblast, primer and top powder coat). All my tubing bend components are C. Mandrel bent, all tubing joints are pneumatic/hydraulic notched, all seam joints are sleeved, welded and polished. All my mounting and light tabs are stamped. All my components are fixture “jig” clamped during welding to ensure accuracy and consistency and to mitigate warping during the welding process. All tubing is cleaned and polished prior to welding. Back in the day reviewers from mayor audio and video magazines were amazed with the introduction of the 5-foot-tall ribbon tweeter by Magnepan. These speakers are always mentioned in the top 20 best speakers ever made for very good reason. These speakers are restored to their full glory with a new ribbon tweeter, new black cloth socks for aesthetics (wife factor) and black painted stans to match black cloth. The serial #s are 063576-1 with serial # ribbon 60.6 18433 and 063576-2. According to Magnepan these speakers do not require a non-inductive 1 ohm resistor, only serial #s below 062758. The 1 ohm resistor will be included as perhaps the new owner might want to experiment. However, a separate preamp and amp combo would greatly improve the sound as I tested with Emotiva, Adcom and Audio Research. The speakers are in excellent working condition.
