Set of Birmingham Stove & Range (BSR) cast iron skillets. Sizes #3 (6-5/8″), #5 (8-1/8″), #6 (9-3/8″), #7 (10-1/4″), #8 (10-5/8″), and will include the “toy / ashtray. There are no cracks, breaks, etc. A bit of staining in a few, which is more of a cosmetic issue that will blend with use / care. There may be a casting flaw, etching, signs of prior neglect, scratches. Marks, other staining / color variation, dark spots from oil pooling during seasoning, etc. They have not been used since the restoration process. Pictures were taken outside in natural light and are a big part of the description. From the Century series, cleaned/seasoned/ready to cook. I’ve restored hundreds of pieces of cast iron cookware. All go through lye to remove any crud, organic material, seasoning, etc. Then I run them through the electrolysis process to remove any corrosion, rust, impurities, etc. They are scrubbed by hand using dish liquid, stainless steel scouring pads, stainless steel brushes, and magic erasers under cold water to bring them back to the bare metal finish. Finally, all pieces are run through three rounds of seasoning using vegetable shortening. Cast iron cookware will last hundreds of years and generations if properly taken care of. These are beautiful, heirloom quality pieces made right here in the USA. Will be bubble wrapped and surrounded by packing material to ensure that they don’t shift in transit. They are not making cookware like this anymore, and I would consider it tragic if anything were to happen to these in transit. They will be packed very well. Up for sale is a RARE vintage 1980s Birmingham Stove & Range (BSR) Cornbread Stick Pan with center handle otherwise known as the Handy Dan, model 74 H. Because BS&R ceased operations in the late 1980s not too many of these pans were produced, thus contributing to their rarity. This pan was acquired in used but good condition and was totally restored to like new condition as outlined below. Cornbread pans in general are more difficult to restore due to all the “nooks & crannies” on these skillets, so people generally don’t want to deal with them. Please see details below & photos for complete description. Color: Pan is a dark chocolate brown/light black from the initial seasonings (4) done after stripping pan down to a gun metal gray. At this stage, it should not look black until it has been used over a period of time. Any pan that looks shiny black in the listing has not gone through this process. In daylight, the skillet will appear dark brown but may appear black in your kitchen due to different lighting environments. Excellent for both gas and electric ovens. Could be used in a convection oven, but please consult your owners guide as to proper use as to baking times, etc. Handle to other side: 10 7/8. Height (including handle): 2. Pre-Packaged Weight: 5 pounds, 9.3 ounces. This pan has been totally stripped to raw metal using a combination of a lye bath soak and a vinegar/water rinse to safely strip the pan down to a gun metal gray. These processes follow industry guidelines for a safe and effective restoration. My specific processes will usually remove all old crud, built up seasoning, rust, and anything else lurking on the skillet. On occasion, there will be old seasoning that can’t be removed without damaging the skillet – however this won’t impede the normal use of this skillet. The pan was then washed down with water, a scouring pad, and blue Dawn mild dish detergent & then dried before entering the seasoning process. This is the most important step in the restoration process and many times takes much longer than seasoning. This is also why my pans look like a deep chocolate brown when finished. My pans are safe, non-stick, and look great from this process! Once pan was thoroughly dried, it was seasoned 4 times with a blend of organic high smoke point oils with beeswax as an emulsifier following industry guidelines. Before seasoning each time and once the pan was sufficiently warmed up, the oil was wiped on and then off again, thus leaving the thin surface of oil which is all that is required when properly seasoning a skillet. I have a process which gradually heats the skillet with the applied seasoning so that it goes on evenly and stays that way. The final step is the baking on of the seasoning beyond the smoke point for an hour. It produces a pan that isn’t gummy or wet, but is a nice dry matte finish. This pan is all ready to use and will continue to season the longer it is used. I have seasoned a number of pans this way using Crisco/Easy Beezy Seasoning Stick after doing the flax seed oil method and find that they work better with the heated skillets for even consistent application, and stays intact without flaking off after correctly using & cleaning the pans after each use. Special attention is given to the handle with extra bubble wrap and situated so that it won’t poke through the box which can happen if not packed properly. Please verify before completing the checkout process – thank you. The item “Vtg BSR Birmingham Stove & Range HANDY DAN Cast Iron Corn Stick Pan RESTORED” is in sale since Tuesday, August 10, 2021. A hard to find antique in fully restored condition and the part numbers actually match. This isn’t a grill set cobbled together with a draft door from this hibachi, a top grill from that and a nameplate from Lodge. This was bought together, used together and kept together until I found it neglected together in an estate sale. Then restored it together earlier this year. It has not been used since restoration was completed. The bottom plate has an ancient crack, but since the coals are held off the bottom by the coal grate, there is no loss in safety or performance. When fully assembled, the crack is pretty hard to see. The interior has some pitting but the exterior is pretty clean with consistent color everywhere. There is no warping, fire damage or chips. Both the coal and cooking grills are intact, unwarped and trouble free. Both doors are also intact and trouble free. When fully assembled this looks great. Absolutely no power tools or excessive heat were used in the restoration of this cast iron grill set. It was thoroughly cleaned using a lye bath and electrolysis, one piece at a time. Each was scrubbed using elbow grease and ordinary soap, water and Walmart plastic scrubbies. Each piece was seasoned with vegetable oil 3x at 500 F. This thing will be packed like a sacred relic. BSR Birmingham Stove Range #12 Cast Iron Skillet. Cleaned and RESTORED – Red Mountain series – Condition is used. A cast iron skillet that’s big enough for holiday cooking. This skillet was manufactured by Birmingham Stove and Range (BSR) in Birmingham, Alabama, probably sometime in the 1930s1940s. Marked on the bottom. RESTORATION: This pan was stripped to bare metal with lye and electrolysis (see last photo). Lye efficiently removes all organic matter including baked on carbon, food remnants, baked on grease, and anything else caked on the metal. This takes anywhere from a few hours in the lye solution to several weeks for especially tough pans. Electrolysis removes everything else using electrical current to separate rust, carbon, and anything the lye has left behind. Time spent in electrolysis is vastly reduced by treating pieces in lye first, so the average pan spends 48 hours in the electrolysis tank. The end result of this process is the elimination of any residue that has accumulated on the pan, ensuring that you start with a completely clean cooking surface. It was then scrubbed with steel scouring pads, steel wool, “magic” erasers, and a lot of elbow grease. It was seasoned with four layers of a blend of palm oil, soybean oil, grapeseed oil, flaxseed oil, and beeswax (all ingredients are non-GMO) polymerized to the iron at 500ยบ for 90 minutes each. This gives your cookware a durable “non-stick” surface that is dry and displays beautifully. It is ready to use as soon as you unpack it and give it a brief rinse, and a little soap won’t hurt it. CONDITION: This pan is in excellent used condition, with no cracks, warping, or repairs that I can see. The cooking surface isn’t smoothly ground, but is a finely-textured pebbly finish that’s ideal for holding seasoning. This texture takes seasoning incredibly well, and you can expect that over time the rough texture of the cooking surface will gradually fill in and become much smoother as you season the pan with your own cooking. There’s one area on the rim at 8:00 that’s either pitted or a favorite place for a previous owner to smack something hard. It won’t bother your cooking. There’s a scuff on the outside wall you will see in the photos. The pan seasoned to a rich, dark black, and it will continue to get darker as you use it. The skillet has a small wobble corrected by 1 business card, and it will not spin. Make sure to enlarge the photos and have a close look at what you will be getting. MEASUREMENTS: This skillet measures approximately 13. Deep and weighs 7 lb. These large Red Mountain skillets don’t come up that often, and this one will serve you and your family for many years to come. It’s a real workhorse in the kitchen. Your piece will be packed securely with bubble wrap, pool noodles, and anything else needed to keep it secure and stable on its way to you. Please zoom and check photos closely, they are part of description. Item in photos is the one you will receive. No international orders pleaseships only to U. No returnsno warrantee expressed or implied. ABOUT: I’ve been cooking in cast iron for most of my life, and rarely use other pans except for a big stock pot. Vintage cast iron has such a rich history in American industry and innovation it gives so much more to the cook than just a pan to cook in. Some people don’t care about how old a pan is, but the real difference is in the iron itself. Vintage pans are smoother, lighter, easier to move around your stove, easier to clean, and generally very satisfying because of the high level of craftsmanship embodied in the pans, since there was always a lot of handwork involved in their production. The “golden age” of cast ironaround the turn of the 20th century and into the 1930sleft us cast iron. Whether I’m searching out pieces, evaluating them, cleaning, scrubbing, oiling, or packing, I’m always keeping you, the end user, in mind. To protect the iron, bring it back as close as possible to beautiful condition, to make sure it gets to you safe and soundthese are my concerns throughout the process. What can you expect? Super nice piece, great packaging!!! In absolutely fantastic condition!! It’s beautifully seasoned. Thanks so much for a wonderful oven. A pleasure to do business with. Happy I bought it.
