(Mid to late 1800’s operated under several variations of names such as “The Great Western Stove Company”, “The Western Foundry & Mill Machinery Works”, “Great Western Manufacturing Company” in the area of 2nd & 3rd streets & Cherokee & Choctaw streets I believe). Weighs – 8.85 pounds. 6-1/2 tall at the spout. 7 tall at the back (opposite of spout). 12-3/4 long – tip of spout to the back. 9-1/2 wide at the waist. 7″ diameter at the bottom with sloping base angle – would fit a stove-top hole at about 7-3/4″ to 8 diameter. On the top of the lid in raised lettering it reads ” WESTERN FOUNDRY – LEAVENWORTH KANSAS – PATENTED MAY 8TH 1866 ” and also the number ” 8 ” on the top of the spout. This rare antique kettle has been stored in my barn for many years, is dusty and could use some cleaning and rubbed down with oil, but displays just fine as is. This kettle has a lip near the bottom and was was made to set onto a heat access hole on the top of a wood or coal cast iron kitchen stove, and looks like it would fit into approx. 7-3/4″ to 8″ diameter. Also notice the pretty rigid but flexible metal handle – see close-up photos 7, 8 & 9 – the ends of it or all is hand-forged on an anvil, and has a flat surface on the outside, arched on the inside. This is a great example of early U. Cast iron history, and I believe was the first (if not only) iron works foundry west of the. In the 1800’s. Is set at a.
