What a pleasure to sit on the couch and be warmed quickly by such a beautiful heater! Using this heater in (or in front of your fireplace on the hearth) is so satisfying in that the radiant infrared glow immediately warms you. It heats a room gradually like other heaters while you are warmed the whole time from the start. It is similar to sitting in front of a campfire on a chilly evening. Gas heaters including this one are meant to be vented through a gas flue of fireplace chimney. Radiants are the ceramic/firebrick material that heat and glow from the flame within them. Without these not much heat will project into a room. This unit has 10 recently bought radiants, all in good condition. I had this one sitting on the hearth of a zero clearance metal fireplace and the vent pipe directed up into the flue of said fireplace. So easy to hook up the gas line from one of these fireplaces to the Radiant fire. Saved on our heating bill since we only used this evenings and don’t like the whole house so warm for sleeping. A few safety concerns to look for in some offerings. Do not use propane in a natural gas appliance without converting for that purpose Propane tanks and regulators apply more pressure than natural gas does therefore propane with their regulators require a much smaller “orifice” in the heater to burn properly and safely. Otherwise they would burn “rich” and produce much soot and carbon monoxide due to incomplete burning if used interchangeably as fuels without conversion.. If you see yellow flames then you see incomplete combustion and increased emissions. Yellow flame outdoors/campfire = ok. Yellow flame indoors/your gas stove = not ok. And now for some funny things to look for in offerings. It is amusing and deceitful that some Humphreys on here have no rediants and are asking full price. Don’t be fooled, all humphreys use radiants, they are practically useless without them. One is placed over every burner. Use it on a backyard deck? Ridiculous especially if that heater did not have and was missing the radiants designed to glow instead of presenting flames. Painted brass on an antique? Ridiculous since polished or “highlight polished” brass is “as intended” and contributes to it becoming the heirloom it should be. I wonder if those who paint antique brass over with paint also paint the chrome over on their automobiles?
